Welcome to Bruin Nation, which is number one in the nation!

On Friday night, Feb. 19, the Bruin Den was filled to near capacity (4,4,00) as there was a hotbed of activity, including a couple of very nice surprises thrown in.

Before the start of the varsity boys basketball game with visiting Southern Wells, Blackford High School seniors involved in winter sports (boys and girls basketball, wrestling, gymnastics and swimming) and band were recognized along with their parents and families.

A touching moment occurred when Bruin Jared Coons delivered the flowers received from first-year head coach Dave Marshall to his grandmother, Della Hornbaker, up in the stands. After giving his grandmother a hug and kiss, Coons returned to the floor to stand alongside his peers to be honored by the applauding crowd.

On top of a great battle played out on the hardwood between Blackford and the Raiders with the home team coming away with a huge victory at the end, there was other additional excitement provided by the appearance of Boomer, the Indiana Pacers mascot, and Rob Harmon, the representative for Lucas Oil Stadium and Centerplate.

Perhaps Harmon had the most thrilling news for those in attendance.

“Obviously the surprise of the night was when Rob told me beforehand that he had done some research and we are number one in the nation as far as money made,” said Bruin Boosters president Chris Landis, who has guided the organization in heading up various school and non-school teams and groups working at food vendor booths inside Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the 2010 AFC football champion Indianapolis Colts.

“For those who did not hear or could not be there – oh, we were #1 at Lucas Oil, but until last night I had no idea we were #1 in the nation,” remarked Landis. “Let me say that again because it just gives me chills – #1 in the nation.”
